How is a Plus Size Pilates™ Class different from traditional mat Pilates?
Pilates is a comprehensive form of exercise involving full range of motion, balance, coordination, deep breathing, sustained mental focus, and active contraction of all muscles in all exercises which are done in a dance like sequence.
Plus Size Pilates accommodates the round shaped body by creatively modifying the movements so that the exercises in the classic Pilates mat lexicon can be performed by an overweight person through the advanced level. These modifications have been diligently tested in the "Experimental Laboratory" to create actual classic Pilates inspired mat moves allowing for the round belly, large chest, heavy arms and legs and expanded hips.The typical results are dramatic and predictable with regular practice.
Since the early days, almost ninety years ago, Joseph Pilates′s exercises have been taught to the dancers shaped athletic body. As taught in health clubs and studios these mat movements are normally extremely difficult to impossible to correctly execute with any type of "wedge" (fat) present.
Roundness is embraced with the knowledge that round is a natural human body shape. Round can be fit. There is no strain to become middle size, removing the pressure of failure to be "not round". It is recognized that there are many individual reasons for roundness beyond diet and activity. All body shapes strive for good health including the round.
A great advantage of Plus Size Pilates™ classes is that all one needs is a mat. There is no need for expensive, bulky equipment meaning the absence of equipment allows for mobility. Once the student is proficient, Plus Size Pilates™ can be practiced anywhere.

The classes are supportive and fun with a spirit of camaraderie.
Mary currently teaches at studios, fitness clubs, and in private homes for individuals and groups. She extensively draws on her nursing experience and fitness knowledge to create the plus size application of Pilates to the round body.
